Went out to Findlay, OH to play Red Hawk Run. Played on Sun and Mon with a package deal. Course was in excellent condition but with severe penalties because of the four foot secondary rough. Bring plenty of extra golf balls because even a slight miss hit is lost in that stuff. I would say it is worth a drive to play. Check out the website for deals. Their package included lunches and a $20.00 gift card to a local restaurant.

Was pleasently surprised after I played Painesville Country Club this weekend. While most of the courses are starting to burn out Painesville was in great shape. There are some very challenging and unique holes that make it a very enjoyable round. I'm surprised this course hasn't been rated by this site.

Gilly:
Have you been playing in a desert? Its rained all summer in this part of the world.

nitrified:
Burned out? Even Hilliard Lakes had green fairways and unusually moist bare spots.

Please re-rank Gleneagles. They have flattened out a lot of the blue tee tee boxes which you say are lumpy in your current review. You lowered the ranking score of the course last season during mid-year for no apparent reason. The layout from the blues is great, the course is always in good shape and no public course has better greens.

Played Thunder Hill the other day and was quite a bit disappointed. They are just not putting the time and effort into keeping that course up. Many dead spots on the greens, tee boxes in horrible shape, and the bunkers were awful. It's a shame that a course with such a fantastic layout is in that condition.

At least it was cheap.

anyone play the Championship 18 @Brandywine in Peninsula lately? Any comments? Thanks

JC:
Yah last week. GREAT front 9, then you hit the back 9 with your driver in the bag. I don't like this course because of the back 9. No drinking water. No yardage except 150 & 100 yds. No cart path on front 9. I would not recommend. GCO rating @ 60 is very generous!!

I have been waiting for the latest Golf Digest Places to Play book to be released. It never happened. A buddy told me the rankings were updated and available online.

There are a few courses in the previous 2006-2007 book, which have dropped. Little Mountain dropped to 4 1/2 stars. Players Club at Foxfire, Cook's Creek, Stonewater, Avalon Lakes, and Red Hawk Run dropped to 4 stars.

Belterra and Eaglesticks did not receive enough votes to be ranked.

I am providing the 4 1/2 star rankings for comment.

Beavercreek Golf Club, Beavercreek
Boulder Creek Golf Club, Streetsboro
Chapel Hill Golf Course, Mount Vernon
Eagle Creek Golf Club, Norwalk
Gleneagles Golf Club, Twinsburg
Granville Golf Course, Granville
Hawks Nest at Ohio State, Creston
Heatherwoode Golf Club, Springboro
Hueston Woods State Park, Oxford
Legendary Run Golf Course, Cincinnati
Little Mountain Country Club, Concord
Longaberger Golf Club, Nashport
Pine Lakes Golf Club, Hubbard
Quail Hollow Resort & Country Club, Concord
Greens/Pines at River Greens Golf Course, West Lafayette
Lakeside/Meadows at Shaker Run Golf Club, Lebanon
Stone Ridge Golf Club, Bowling Green
The Links at Echo Springs, Johnstown
The Vineyard Golf Course, Cincinnati
Thunder Hill Golf Club, Madison
Yankee Run Golf Course, Brookfield
Apple Valley Golf Club, Howard

Moondog Ale:
What are the criteria they use for this? Green fees, service, facility's, hot beer chics? I haven't played too many of these but where are Shale Creek, Blue Heron, Grey Hawk, Deer Ridge? Golf Digest is a rag.

sungolfer:
Glen Eagles AND Longaberger at 4 1/2 stars? Wow, there is a pretty big difference between the two. If there were on a scale from 1 to 100, I bet they would be at least 20 points apart. A scale from 1 to 100, hmmm, sounds familiar.

DougR:
Hiya Gregorie!

Just noticed your comments on Eagle Ridge. They are, of course, spot on: most fun course I have ever played.

Welcome to GCO, another really nice course oriented website.

Hueston Woods 4.5 and not Dale Hollow in KY? Sad. And, of course, not even enough to get a rating for ER or Hidden Cove, two more awesome courses [at least 4.5!]. Aston Oaks better than 3/4 of this OH list. So WAS Elk Run, though the new owners appear to be running it into the ground.

Again, where the Hell is Black Diamond, at true 4.5*.Where is Stonelick Hills? And NO WAY Heatherwoode is 4.5*.

On my 'to play list' now are River Greens, Boulder Creek, and Thunderhill among others.

Thanks for the info, see ya at GKL.

Doug/Wilma

Greg:
River Greens is very nice, but different. It is your wide open field with 30-foot high pine trees and river lining the fairways. It is truely great, but not your standard upscale course by any means. Play Black Diamond while your in the area, but was not impressed with the conditions last summer. The layout is incredible.

Eagle Ridge is more amazing than Thunder Hill, but they are both very very unique. Make sure you monitor the conditions at Thunder Hill. I heard conditions plummeted a few years back. I have heard it has returned a smidge. I would highly recommend Little Mountain after 3:00PM on your way back home.

Played Spring Valley the other day. Good shape and decent layout. The renovated holes were nice and the old ones still had some charm. Good value.

We are thinking of going to a different guestbook/forum. I have been testing one where anyone can view, but to post or make a reply, you will need to register. Just a simple email to us and we send you a login and you can post to your hearts content provided your not a spammer.

Even though we have banned many users and entire countries, there are still some who we can't seem to ban. We might go to the new forum soon so don't be surprised.

Spam seems to be way down, perhaps we are making progress. Seemed to have nailed the big spammers. We'll see if they circumnavigate us. We'll keep the board, as is, as long possible.

Got to play Shale Creek. Excellent course. Really enjoyed the layout. You were able to bomb it on many of the holes and not get yourself in trouble from the black tee boxes. I thought the price was very reasonable.

I also played Bunker Hill, which was in very good condition. There is a big difference between the front nine and back nine as far as difficulty. They have internet specials. Check out their website.

There are numerous posts regarding Blue Heron. If you like Blue Heron, you need to get in the vehicle and drive to Louisa, KY. Eagle Ridge will quadruple the fun factor and design of Blue Heron. The conditions are also much better.

The Wow factor is similar to Thunder Hill, but nothing like Thunder Hill.

Looking to play a nice course with great greens. I've thought about Little Mountain or Boulder Creek. Which course is in better shape this year? Any other suggestions? Thanks for the input, love the website.

JJ:
Little Mountain is a far better golf experience than Boulder Creek. But personally I like The Quarry over both of these courses.

We have been banning spam postings like crazy and have now even been banning entire foreign countries. Won't know if it works and hope we don't have to go to a system of registration or posting review. Sucks how some can ruin a good thing for everyone.

GCO;

On the best state golf website in USA [IMHO], golfkentuckylinks.com the webmaster, Ron Watterson, had this very problem on the Forum. He found a way to beat it completely. I recommend you go to the site and send him an e-mail. He maybe can help you. I sure hate to see this happen to you. I follow your pix a lot, and they are excellent quality, inspiring me to go to your courses.

Thanks

PLAYED AT EAGLE CREEK IN NORWALK ON THURSDAY. COURSE IN GREAT SHAPE. THE COURSE HAS A NICE LAYOUT. THE FRONT NINE LETS YOU BOMB IT AND THE BACK NINE MAKES YOU USE OTHER CLUBS OFF THE TEE. THE GREENS ARE VERY FAIR. GOOD WEBSITE TOO.

I was looking for a golf resort outside of Cleveland that has overnight accomadations. Looking for something for a special occassion. Any suggestions ?

Try Sawmill Creek in Huron, OH. Try Peak-n-Peek in New York. Both are great tracks with reasonable prices. Not too far from Cleveland.

The greens at Little Mountain were sub par, period. They werent receptive to the incomings, they were slow, they were patched up, I was just disappointed. For essentially 80 bucks I would rather play alot of courses around Cleveland. Those greens are substandard if you are paying 50 bucks to play.

It had nothing to do with the ball I play, which was a Callaway Tour ix. I tend to hold anywhere I play if the greens are fair. Regards

notonmywatch:
Fair enough.

I am a memebr at Little Mountain and there was some construction and work going on in the Spring which took away from the course and conditions. I can honestly say its the best Ive seen in 8 yrs right now. Go give it a second chance

What does that mean, "unreceptive to incoming shots?" I see this comment all the time. Does it mean hard greens? So you are complaining the greens are not soft enough? The only reason you would want a soft green is so a topflite will stop on a dime after leaving a crater sized ball mark. PGA quality greens are very hard for a reason. Beside rolling true and fast with less pitch marks than soft greens, it takes more skill to stop a ball on a hard green. Usually a well flighted approach and/or a lot of spin. You are not going to back up a ball on a soft green, it just sits there where it lands.

Soft greens generally go with slow speeds and poorer putting surfaces and low end courses. The harder the green, the faster they can roll and the less you worry about pitch marks and footprints. It is a trade off in many ways.

Bill Dish:
Nice post from notonmywatch. I usually hear people use the term "the greens arent holding" But how am I to know if this guys shot is coming in from the rough or from the fairway, from 60 yards or 260 yards, off an iron or a wood, if he's a good golfer or a poor one, is he using Pro Vs or stolen range balls, and exactly how many beers did he drink that round.
It seems as though some people expect their approach shots to stick to every green, on every course, like a punt does at Heinz Field.(Go Browns)
By the way, how many professional golfers do you ever hear talking about this topic?

Blue Heron is in pretty good shape. The greens putt great but they are very hard and don't accept approach shots well. Aren't greens supposed to soften up after a few years? This is year four.

I Love Highland Park:
I've been told in the past that greens become more receptive as they mature (though I am no turf expert). I've had that same problem at blue heron as well; though my problem may be that I can't hit an approach higher than 10-feet off the ground. On another note, is the new 9 open for play? Can you get under I-71?
_ILHP

Glenn:
I can hit it straight up in the air and it still bounces over the green on the first bounce. No time for the spin to hold the ball. The 3rd nine is open under 71.

Re: Thunder Hill.

Played here this past Saturday. I must say that the course is as difficult as ever; however, I was somewhat saddened with the greens. I understand that the course has undergone some changes over the past few years, but I was expecting the greens to be in better shape. Granted I'm no expert when it comes to turf management but it seems as though there is a different type of grass used on the greens compared to what I had experienced previously (~ 2 years ago). Regardless, I thought the greens could be smoother and faster (at least smoother). Otherwise, the course seems to be in great shape considering the terrain that the grounds crew has to manage. Any thoughts? Am I crazy for thinking that the greens are of a different seed? If so why would they change?
