Great site for N.E Ohio golfers. I've played most of the top twenty I know rankings are subjective but Firestone farms and Kensington are very ordinary and overpriced courses.Play Manikiki,Sleepy hollow,or Aurora .
segolfer:
Ordinary? No way. I know Kensington has specials. Check their website. Manakiki and Sleepy Hollow take forever to play. Manakiki is constantly under construction.

First time I've been to this site, its good and I think most of the ratings and discussions are pretty close to being right on, based on my very humble opinions. I'm an east sider, so with deference to the west-siders, here are just a couple of my thoughts on some of the good public golf we are lucky enough to have here in NE Ohio.
Manakiki and Sleepy Hollow are can't miss places to play. Shawnee Hills is a good track but could be a really good track with just a little bit of tinkering (let's hope the new exec director of the MetroParks, who has a golf course mgt background, sees it that way too). The MetroPark's Frequent Golfer Plan is a great value-added program. Punderson and Fowler's Mills are always a good challenge. Grantwood and Glen Eagles are good muni courses and great values.
Sugar Bush, in Garrettsville, is a hidden gem...ya got to make the effort to get out there and play, there's plenty of reasons why its on this sites top 20 list...#5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are a great stretch of holes.
There's alot of talk here about Boulder Creek, its a good layout, but overrated and over priced. Same goes for Little Mountain and StoneWater. Tanglewood and Aurora are on life support but are great tracks, in there hey day they both hosted PGA events. Tanglewood made abit of a come back towards the end of the season last year, hope they both can make it.
For a surprise, check out Oak Tree on the Ohio/PA border near Hubbard, OH

Hey I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to play Tanglewood? Its open again and public.
GOOD luck:
Yes it is open to the public but it is on life support. The greens are very beat up and nobody is fixing them. Once the course gets past this year think it will be one of the best tracks around. Give a year.
|
KAR:
No, but everyone should stay away from Greyhawk. It used to be a nice course, but now it is has worse conditions than Seneca Muni. Greens are hail damaged, the fairways are mostly browned out grass and dirt. You would have thought the Beverly Hillbillies were managed that place and somehow they still want $55!! Stay away!!
|
AJ:
You're right about Greyhawk, this website is a joke to have them as #7!
|
Nitrified:
I just played at Grey Hawk this past weekend and despite all the rain in the week before, the course was in fine shape. It was a bit burned out earlier in the year, but the fairways looked pretty good for October. Also, the greens were excellent and have been that way all year.

Played Windmill Lakes, The Sanctuary and Turkeyfoot this week and all 3 should be on the top 20 list! Turkeyfoot is the best conditioned course I have played this year. It truely is in country club condition. Windmill Lakes is a close second in condition with awesome greens. The Sanctuary is a great layout and although not as in good a shape as the other two it is still very nice. The greens do show that it gets a lot of play but the roll true and are very very quick! The guy in the clubhouse said they just had them stimped at 11!
segolfer:
Got to play Turkeyfoot this weekend. Great email special. The course was in excellent condition and play moved along even with alot of twosomes on the course.

First of all, this is a great site. Yesterday I played Brandywine for the first time. The front nine was decent and fun, but the back nine.....HOLY COW! I wouldn't consider this a top tier course, but I've never seen anything like the back nine at Brandywine. Tight and bizarre are the only words I can think of to describe it, but both fall woefully short. It was cartoonish....and I loved it despite the fact that it brought me to my knees. If you haven't been....check it out.

Played Thunder Hill this weekend. We all know about the excellent layout and level of difficulty, that will never change. I want to talk a bit about why the guru's at this website knocked this course out from the top 5 a while back. One word sums up the course conditions - inconsistent. You'd have chewed up greens on one hole, and a perfectly manicured green on the next. Bare patches in the fairways one hole, nice green pastures on the next. That theme kept coming up hole after hole. And it wasn't just the greens; fairways, bunkers, all were like that. It's really too bad. This is all of course my humble opinion, but if not for some awesome discounts that are available, I wouldn't play there. They still seem to get a lot of outings though.
Kenny Sharperson:
They have times posted on EZLinks.com
Great site for those of us who do not like paying regular price.

I played Black Diamond this week. The course is in excellent shape. It has to be one of the hilliest designs in Ohio. My only complaint is the greens. they are so slanted that you are severly penalized. Takes away from a fun day of golf. Definetly worth the trip. Maybe you need to play from the tee boxes that allow you to drive the green to give you as many chances to put so you can make par.

When are they going to update the top 20 it says spring of 2009 but its summer of 09 now so.......a little late how about some updates please. oh and by the way Boulder creek is one of the best/worst courses i've ever played in Ohio. The course is challenging which makes it great and depending on the time of year I agree with Tazman, it can be in poor shape. But overall I love the course, give it another chance Taz you just caught it at the wrong time and I think you will enjoy it when its in the shape it is now. The employee attitude still needs improving but hey they love their course and they "drink their own Kool-aid" I love that crack!!

I am new to golfing, I read Harvey Penicks three books last year and then I got some hand me down clubs and went to the driving range. So this year I dared go on a course. It seems a pretty simple sport you hit the ball, swear and then go into a grove of trees and tried to find it. Most likely even if you don’t find your ball you will find a ball to play. I have taught myself how to play but I may have to se a pro soon because I am not getting any better. Well anyway I had a review of royal oaks in Grafton Ohio that I played last Sunday. It’s not a very pleasant course it has bare spots in the fairways and rough. The greens were actually nice. There is train that comes by three of the holes there is a bulldozer on four I think and on five behind the green is a ditch full of cinder blocks and other debris. When we called for pricing she gave us the weekday pricing and that was disappointing when we got there being twice what we were quoted.
me:
seeing a pro can only help, but it will take YEARS to get alot better.... it takes time, then when you get to that level, it takes more and more time on the course to take the next step..

Played Manakiki over the weekend. I used to play there a lot but I haven't been back in a few years. Since then they've done a fabulous job reworking some bunkers and changing the shape of some holes. I thought the changes made to the par 3 7th hole are incredible. It used to be a bland hole, now they've made the green smaller, added some contour to the bunker on the right and turned the cart path around to the left. I really liked it. Also they reshaped the 18th green complex, the fairway extends all the way up to the green with a small grass bunker in front of the green. They also reduced the uphill slope considerably. A few new bunkers on 12 to help shape the hole better. Overall conditions were good, greens were consistent and medium paced. Slow play always plagued this course and that hasn't chnaged. The starter was not very friendly either.
segolfer:
Played Manakiki on Sat. I also haven't played there in a while. I also like the changes they have made. Looks like more changes for 9 and 16 eventually. Great course!

Played Spring Valley in Elyria Sunday and it had some ups and downs. The major down was finding the tee boxes and the layout of the course it has you going in every direction to the next hole except the logical one, second was the ranger tried to tell us the group behind us was playing at a faster rate of play and if it continued to let them play through, we (3 golfers) had to wait on a two some who were a bit more amateur then your normal in front and with all fairness to them they played 10 to 15 minute holes which to me a descent standard. third and last complaint was cart path conditions, back roads looked better then these, I don't know if they under renovation for alot of these conditions but its mid season and this should all of been completed. Now on the positive note the holes (with exception to tee boxes) were great. Alot of elevation changes, the 3rd hole has you driving it down into a valley and flying it back up to the hole. The greens were in good condition along with the fairways. "Grip it and Rip it"

Played Boulder 3 times this year. As a beginner golfer I didn't fair too bad, did well espc on the greens. The course could be much nicer but is overal a great course. I would much rather go to Kennsington in Canfield, Ohio. Plays very well and is well maintain and has no off color comments from its staff. At Boulder I have often felt like I was troubeling them. Kennsington has a great practice facility, gps equipped carts and a friendly staff and group of players. Boulder seems to promote Drunk golfers who enjoy gleaming in the glow of their alochol enticed handicaps. If you haven't tried Kennsington, what are you waiting for!? They offer great specials for such a nice course. Huntley did a great job with this course, I beleave he is the same man who desighned The Quarry as well. Next year we are taking the trip to Whistling Straights, looks like a beautiful Open style course. Any feedback?

i just wanted to bring up something about the pictures of the golf courses. I've played cherokee quite a bit this year, and i don't know how it was before or how long ago you took the pictures, but all your images and hole numbers are backwards. you have the back 9 and the front 9 mixed up. hole one's picture is actually 10. it's like that for every picture you have
Carl:
Matt. Those pictures were taken VERY long ago..at least 9 years. If you take a look at the club house, it's still a barn. When Cherokee renovated and became "copper top" they switched the 9s. I've been following this website for 3 years now and I still can't believe nobody has updated the photos...the course is actually much better looking that GCO's photos indicate.

gus:
They may not take debit cards at the snack bar but there is an ATM about 20 feet away from the counter. More importantly, with the course firm and fast, keep your ball out of the woods and STAY BELOW THE HOLE!

Hey Maurice… Pine Hills has better service than Boulder Creek? Unless they just recently came under new management this season I do not see them having better service than Boulder. I have had nothing but bad experiences from the staff there; which is a shame because it is a beautiful course. It is almost as if they put themselves on a pedicel and are more of a country club than a public golf course and that is clearly not the case. I don’t appreciate being talked down to like a child and for $10 more I’d rather play Boulder.
To GCO… I love the site and your top 20 for northeast Ohio. I am playing the Quarry this weekend for the first time and look forward to the round. Also, you need to get the Aurora Country Club listed as an available course; it could easily make the top 20. I do not see it as top 10 yet, they need to improve the conditions of the course for the cost but it is a great track to play.
captain:
pedicel= pedestal
|
MJ:
The difference between the two courses is actually almost $17. I have never had any issues while playing at Pine Hills but have had issues at Boulder. Any course should be very thankful that any golfers are coming out to play their courses in these economic times. Bad customer service should not be tolerated.

My only complaint about Boulder Creek is the condition of the greens, and that's primarily because of the morons that play there and don't fix their ball marks. Service is fair-not great. Too pricey during prime time for this area. Pine Hills, Windmill Lakes, Grey Hawk, Sleepy Hollow are all as good with better pricing and much better service.
Anyone who plays Thunder Hill from the tips needs his head examined. The whites are enough for even a single digit handicap. As for Fowler's Mill, do they still treat their customers like they're the only golf course in Ohio????? My foursome hasn't been back there in five years.
Seve:
I've played Fowler's 7 times this year already and while they can be a little stuffy, I don't have any real complaints about the staff. I'd go back, the conditions are excellent this year, the greens are wicked. My only complaint is that they don't ever seem to set the 12th tee box on the right-most teeing area. It's a totally different hole from over there. I wish they'd switch it up more often.

Played at Thunder Hill this weekend. We played from the tips. I don't think I will do that again. Everyone else seemed to be playing from the much closer tees because of all the water. Lots of big branches and trees in the way, which made the farther tees impossible. The entire course had an unkept feel with course maintenance. Driving you cart on the path was difficult with vegetation in your face. It is very scenic and very challenging. More challenging than it needs to be. Really like the course overall and they do over email specials.

Its nice to see many others agree with the customer service @ Boulder Creek. I had an incident 2 and a half years ago where a group of drunken golfers hit in to us for most of the second 9 holes. When I went in to complain after the round and ask for a 3 or 4 hole rain check, the staff told me to take a hike. I emailed the pro and club, they never responded. Its nice to see people are wising up to the "TURD" this place offers up. What a shame ......i do like the layout but they do not treat customers w/ respect. The 2 foursomes I used to take from Mahoning county 3 or 4 times a year.....we dont miss the place 1 bit. Try Avalon Lakes, The Links@ Firestone. You wont be disappointed.

I've played Boulder Creek 4 of the last 6 years and I have to say the course is just overrated, the conditions have varied from poor to upper end country club (save the tons of divots people feel they dont need to fix). I have found that I always score (71-76) great there regardless of how I seem to strike the ball. I think design is great for outings but as far as pure tests of golf, good but not on the level of some of the other courses in NE Ohio

I made a tee time at Boulder Creek about 3 weeks ago. I was ready to cancel, because of the negative talk about the course. I ruled Boulder Creek today!! I shot 73 from the black tee, this course is awsome. 24 putts in 18 holes, and lots of skin money. The pro gave me a few tips that that golden. I feel like I went out on a date with a super model today.
PS Get the italian sausage at the turn, and the cougar on the bev cart is sweet

If I was able to shoot a 73, I would think the course was fantastic as well. As for the cougar, she didn't make an impression on me because I don't recall her but I'm sure she is lovely. Maybe the course is turning the corner?

I guess I offended a few Boulder Creek employees with my last post. About the sand on the greens, I understand it helps the greens but when its like putting through a sand trap its a little overkill. Guess I don't drink the Boulder Creek kool-aid like the others here. I'm just saying for the money play Little Mountain or about 20 other local courses.
Thomas:
Why would you think I work at boulder creek, I enjoy golf and enjoy a great golf course. And I cant stand when people trash an excellant track. Yes everyone has their own opinion. To each his own I guess.
|
tazman:
all I was saying is this is a management issue with the treatment of PAYING customers when they ask a simple question. I agree it was a nice course if the greens were not topdressed in june. The tee boxes were beat up as well but that must be from all the play they get(they must be incredibly strong to use wedges on 500 yard par 5's to gouge the hell out of the tee boxes like that)

Iam sorry i have to disagree about the comment about boulder creeks course. For the last 4 years i try to play boulder creek at least once a month. Since last fall when the the new super came to boulder you can tell a 100% turn around . Greens roll better, fairways roll better, and with the comment about up keep.Sand on the greens , thats up keep its called top dressing. Top dressed greens improves the putting surface.

I agree about Boulder Creek. I live about 2 minutes from the course but only play it about once every 2 years or so. Too expensive, the rangers are aholes and the course should be in better shape for that price!

Played Boulder Creek today was very dissatisfied with the course. Glad that I only payed 35.00 with the shape it is in its not worth even that let alone their normal rates. where to begin... Half of the greens were mostly covered in sand and airiated, if you hit short of the greens within the no cart area the ball plugged. The tees were another thing, I mean come on move them once in a while they were butchered!! Asked about the greens and tees and was told "well if you don't like the coures then go somewhere else." Talk about customer friendly! This course wants to be ranked in the elite of ohio when they don't even have a clue about normal upkeep, let alone manners when someone questions the way they take care of their track. I have played 15 of the Top 20 on this site this year and I have to say this one does not belong near the top.
Seve:
I agree 100%, I played there two years ago and the conditions were good but I didn't care too much for the layout. I went back a week ago to give it another shot and I had similar reaction as the original poster. The folks that run this site knocked down Thunder Hill big time for poor conditions. Boulder Creek should get the same treatment until we see some improvement.

Played Hawks Nest in Creston this weekend (near Lodi Outlet). Course is in great shape. Watchout for secondary rough, which should only come into play on a few holes. Excellent layout and they have reversed the course, which makes the pace of play much better. Gave us a coupon for $25.00 round on next visit.

Played Wicked Woods over the weekend. Conditions were great overall, the only complaint is the greens were a little less receptive than I'd like, it was difficult to get any check on chips and pitches, but the greens rolled nicely. A really fun track. The usual complaint is that the course is a little short for the long hitter, but the thick trees that surround almost every hole force you to choose accuracy over length anyway. It wasn't busy for a saturday afternoon, pace of play was good and the staff was friendly. $45 w/cart.

Has anyone had a pace-of-play problem at Bunker Hill? The last two years, I have not played a round in less than five and a half hours. Last year, I played there twice, 1 round was 6 and a half hours, and the other round played nearly 4 hours on the front nine, including a 5 group backup on #9, when we made the turn, we were forced to re-play the front nine because there was still a massive back-up on 10. We were forced to leave after 13 holes because we lost daylight.
Today, after much hesitation, we decided to give Bunker hill one last chance. We were able to squeeze our 18 out in a mere five and a half hours...though both groups behind us had enough and left. I'm wondering if I just have bad luck, or if Bunker Hill's rangers just don't care.
Big f:
I live 10 minutes from Bunker but never play it due to the length of time it takes to play the course. The problem is two fold: first, they don't adhere to strict tee times. They even admit it, if they have tee times fully booked from 10:00 to 11:00 and people walk in, they just throw them right into the mix. The second problem is they have driveable par 4's - so every amateur waits for the green to be empty before teeing off.

Played out in Mansfield, Ohio at Pebblecreek. Course was in great shape. The greens were fast and lots of undulation. Unfortuneatly, turned birdies into bogies. Lots of different looks- some short par fours, some uphill and downhill par fours. Fun course. They have some specials.

The problem with Blue Heron is that it is sort of like a glorified math test instead of a first rate golf test. "Let's see, there's a lake out there 210 yards away and I need to carry it 300 yards to clear it...what should I do? I've got it, I'll lay up with my 190-yard club and have a full 3-wood into the green!" There's no risk-reward. It's not like you have a choice to make, the course tells you what to do and you either do it or else make double bogey or worse. The people are nice and the course is beautiful but you leave it feeling like you were just the victim of a drive-by shooting.
Big f:
#6 Highlands can be considered a hole that you are describing. One out of 18. It just sounds to me that people go out there and get there ass handed to them and they think its the courses' fault. Stick with the Big Met's and Bunker Hill's and feed your ego.

NEOpar:
I have to agree with your assessment of Blue Heron. I played there twice, both times using gift certificates, both times playing Highlands and River. All of their advertising emphasizes a fun round regardless of your handicap. I couldn't disagree more. BH has one of the most beautiful layouts I've ever seen, but for someone who shoots between 88-93 on average, both of my rounds were miserable. The gold tees present a relatively short layout, especially on the River 9, and playing from the blues either requires a massive carry off the tee, or puddle jumping...on nearly every hole. I don't mind target golf, but most places that play that way don't have a canyon to carry on nearly every hole. Target golf is OK if you have a reasonable chance of paring holes. On a side note, I also heard that while the clubhouse does a great event hosting business, the course, which is not run by the same people, is in serious danger of foreclosure. That'll be something to watch.

Deano:
Hey Big F, I am a 14 handicap and shot 88 from the blues last time I was there. Played Bethpage Black on a vacation last year and am getting ready for Harbour Town in July. Real golf courses with no bells or whistles. Where is this Big Met you're talking about? Sounds like you know a lot about it...be glad to check it out some day.

Big f:
Deano: You can find info on Big Met at this web site. Actually, Mastick Woods sounds more up your alley.

The course and banquet hall IS run by the same people and the course is just fine. More rounds this year than any other.

I respectfully disagree with the review about Blue Heron as do many of my acquaintances on the links. The track is definitely a challenge, but does not allow the golfer of any handicap to play their true game. Many shots, especially off the tee, force the golfer to select a club other than what would come naturally and force a unnaturally long 2nd shot to another landing area or distant green. This course ends up becoming very expensive especially for the golfer who is unfamiliar with the layout who will lose a dozen balls from the layout alone. The actual greens fees do not justify this brutally difficult course which smacks you in the back of the head like your father after swearing to his face. You then ask yourself..."why did I just do that to myself?" The heavy recommendation is NEVER to go back the the Blue. There are may other worthy courses in the Northeast Ohio area worth your money, balls, and time. Don't waste it the Medina way...
Big f:
So let me get this straight: because Blue Heron is brutally difficult it should be cheap? I have played BH many times and yes, until you get to know the layout of the course, it can be frustrating - but that can be said for many courses! Bashing a course for bad service, bad conditions is one thing, but to bash because it is too difficult? Practice more!

DougR:
I have said before. I like the look of the course, and it is challenging. I also like 'target golf'. But this course IS repetitive. We played the two origional nines, and we found shot after shot that must be played over chasm's and between chasm's. So you MUST play within a very limited range. And it was the same theme repeated over and over. If you like target golf, there are several better, with quite differing themes, not same ole same ole. I am glad to have played this course once, but not tempted to go back. And BTW, my score was actually quite good for me. I can play target golf ok, I just do not want to play repititious golf.

Played The Quarry yesterday. The 13th hole is one of the best ever played. The 18th is the prettiest finishing hole ever played.
Do you really like the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th holes at 'The Quarry'?
If so... You want to play Eagle Ridge in Louisa, KY. The price to play Eagle Ridge Saturday morning is 50% off 'The Quarry'. The cost to play the afternoon is 65% off.
The conditions last year at Eagle Ridge were better than 'The Quarry'. The entire course (Eagle Ridge) is designed a step above the holes listed above. You will not believe the experience for the dollar.
