Has anyone on the board tried ezlinks.com?
Saved some cash and they seem to have better courses and deals then LMG if you are a bargain hunter

You need to go to Pleasant Hills out in Chardon. Fun course with U.S. Open fast greens. Well, maybe not that extreme but the greens are one of the fastest I've ever played. Also, I think you guys are to harsh on Blackbrook. They're making a lot of changes this year, so the condition will greatly improve
DougR:
Never quite understood the enchantment of superfast greens. Cumberland Trail, in Columbus, makes brag of theirs. I played them and they were certainly very fast, but not that interesting. Make a truly interesting putting surface that fast and every shot would end up in a low area or off the green. Dull to me.

Played Tartan East, the former Winding Hollow Country Club now gone public. This is a must play. It will quickly become a Top Five Ohio course IMHO. It compares favorably with Art Hill's other S Ohio public masterpiece, Shaker Run.
Go to Columbus and enjoy it!

Has anyone been to Thunderhill these days? What kind of shape is it in?
Vincent:
I played there twice. I thought the course was in very good condition. Check out there website for Birthday special. Fun course
|
dan:
I decided to play there on Wednesday. I was not disappointed. They have a little ways to go on manicuring the details of the course but the course is definitely getting back to where it was. Greens were way way way better then two years ago. Nice job to the new management, keep up the good work.

notonmywatch:
We played Thunder Hill the other day and it was in great shape. This an awesome track and the price cannot be beat. The new owners have brought it most of the way back to its former glory. The fairways and tees were awesome and all but two greens were fantastic. The other two greens were a little bumpy but will be fine in a few weeks. The green speed is medium since they are working on bringing them up to championship quality and don't want to stress them to much for a few weeks. They are also making improvements around several greens complexes by removing trees to allow more sun and air to the greens at the same time allowing for a few more errant shots.

Jeff;
Yes, we drove up from Cincy to play Black Diamond. You will not be disappointed! It was a blast. I will say I think the given slope is a bit low. The course is challenging, very much so. But well worth it.
And enjoy all the Amish folk, being careful of them on those roads. The trip was pretty cool too. Nice place for a course.
Jeff:
Doug / Mike, thanks for the feedback. We have added Black Diamond to our schedule for this years golf trip.

I used to visit many of the courses listed on this site when I lived in the Canton area and one thing I always wanted to see was the last time the course was rated. I have visited some courses that were much better or much worse off than described. This would be a nice thing to see added to the course decriptions.
Also, has anyone played Black Diamond golf course that is listed in the Trips section? We make a trip to play Apple Valley each year and were thinking about playing Black Diamond as well this year. Is it worth it?
Mike:
Jeff, I played Black Diamond last August, and it is an incredible course. There is nothing else like it in this area. It's definitely not a course for beginners. Unbelievable elevation changes, and the 12th hole has the scariest tee shot I've ever seen. It's only around $30 for 18+cart during the week, so it's also one of the best values around.

I have enjoyed your site for some time. I live in Cincy and have done most of my golfing in KY, IN, OH and WV, with some trips to MI, TN, VA, and NC.
I was looking at your 'Trips' section and was pleased you had discovered Old Silo, a very nice KY course. Only the State Park Golf Trail has better publics in KY. There are two closer to you than Old Silo [via I-77 to I-64]. They are Hidden Cove and Eagle Ridge in E KY. On you scale I would rate Hidden Cove 94, and Eagle Ridge is a very interesting problem. It is so extreme, that if you love that kind of golf, as I do, you would rate it 98(!), if you do not, you would likely only rate it about 89.
Either way, I 'called' to tell you that KY is the best public golf around Cincy, just as you likely know that Michigan is best near you. If you get a chance, visit those two. Max $42 and very cheap, nice accomadations make it a very worthwhile multiday trip.
Thanks again for the great site.
tjblue:
Cinci and KY has some of the best public golf in the midwest. I enjoyed Fox hill and Lassing Pointe. Great bang for the buck.

Just played blue Heron for the first time. What a great course. The best terrain for any golf course in northeast Ohio. It needs a little tweaking and maturing but should be best course around very soon.
Mike:
Blue Heron needs a complete redesign!! Great terrain but a terrible design!!! What was he thinking??

I read your site's review of Dorlon out in Columbia Station. I live out there and I've been golfing there for years. The course has really improved in the past couple years- they've added trees along the fairways, so you can play a shorter course (if you need it...). The greens are in good shape - they hold a put real true. If you're calling the course too long, you might want to try someplace more at beginner level... meadowood, maybe?

anyone have any inside info as to why the Big Met cannot get some decent starters and decent pace of play? i showed up sunday for my tee time to find they were 3 groups behind at the 1st tee.. fortunately we persuaded them to let us sneak out the back only to wait 5 minutes or so for every tee/approach shot.
no wonder i alway try to avoid big met even though it is pretty decent and very close to my house..
Stefanos:
thanks for letting me view your guest book and giving me all the information

The guestbook doesn't look to be too popular. It looks like you have access to a Windows Host by seeing the League pages - I would recommend Yet Another Forum - open source - take an hour to get up and running and free.

What happened to the message board? Why in the world would you transition from a message board where you can see replies to a guestbook?
Am I missing something?
Admin:
You can post replies and they are easily visible like this, just click the little icon at the top of the message which looks like paper and pencil.
|
lance:
ok, now that makes sense... but a REAL message board would make even more sense. this is the best golf site for cleveland, but you do need a real message board. but now that we know how to use it, maybe we can get some daily content
|
lance:
change that icon to a giant "REPLY" BUTTON......... it does not even show up if you scroll over it...
|
Conffused Golfer:
Wow I had no idea that pencil and paper was a reply icon! Still like the old message board formate better, but love the site either way.
By the way, I hear Berkshire Hills is under new management. Anyone know if it's still open or what's going on ?

I think Chad is saying that Highland Park is at its best when it is closed. Or to put it another way, it is best to close Highland Park.

Is Blue Heron as tough as I hear it is? Greens fast?
Pete:
I haven't played blue heron in over a year primarily, in my opinion, due to the course needing to mature (or grow in). My opinion was supported as the greens did not hold approach shots well, even with close (<100 yrds) approach shots taking hard bounces. For its age, BH's green were average. As a comparison, Boulder Creek and Little Mtn had much better (smoother, faster, more receptive) greens when they were Blue Heron's age.
Blue Heron is tough in one repsect in that you have to play "target golf" - you can't just bomb it off the tee without going into one of many hazards that cross its fairways at 220-240 yds off the tee (if playing white/blue). Rather you have to manage the course taking either hybrid/iron off the tee to put yourself in good position on the approach. You can hit driver more often if you play the tips, though depending on the type of player you are, you will lengthen the course to ~6900 yds. Example even if you play the tips you can only expect to hit Driver on H2, H6, H8 (if you cut the corner), L1, L4, L5, L8 (which you really don't need driver), and L9. Therefore, out of 14 par 4/5s you can only hit driver 7 times at best.
Don't get me wrong, I think blue heron is a nice course. Its difficultly will be based upon how willing you are to play smart golf and accept what the course gives you and your own limitations. I'd be curious to hear anyone else's comments on how the greens are now and how the River nine is coming along. Thanks.
|
Vincent:
I played Blue Heron twice last year. I really like the golf course. I agee with the comments. It is all about shot making. The staff is friendly and helpful. I'm hoping to play it soon.

Eagle Creek is not that good a track - and certainly not worthy of a Major in a League. There are much better local courses to choose from: Blue Heron, Shale, Thunder, Grey Hawk to name a few. And Hawks Nest is nice for a Sunday afternoon - but again, not worthy of a major.
Bill D.:
Moondog, I was wondering why Eagle Creek does not meet your expectations? I travel there a few times a year and like the golf course. It's a nice layout. Also, they have alot of specials and are golfer friendly.
